Q1. I have done my under-graduation, and I have always been interested in the hospitality industry. Could you please let me know the areas of work in this industry, the different levels of entry, mode of selection and some institutions offering the hotel management course?

Q2. I am interested in doing a course in Hotel Management and Catering after my under-graduation. Could you please apprise me about the joint entrance examination conducted by the National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology?

Q3. I am interested in pursuing a Bachelor in Tourism (3years) course from theUniversity of Delhi. Could you let me know the colleges offering this course?

QS. I have done my under-graduation, and I have always been interested in the hospitality industry. Could you please let me know the areas of work in this industry, the different levels of entry, mode of selection and some institutions offering the hotel management course?

ANS. The growth of the hotel industry is linked closely to the tourism sector as you would know. Hotels require specialized trained staff for various departments: food and beverage,(catering managers, banquet managers chefs etc)front office, house keeping, accounting, marketing, recreation and other services, computer application, financial management, engineering, public relations etc.

There are several points of entry into hotel operation departments and hence there are several training options:

At the Craft level-X class school qualification, e.g. of jobs-bakery, reception, room attendant etc.

Apprenticeship-XII class school qualification, training of 6 months – to 1 year with a mandatory stipend paid.

Diploma /degree in hotel management –There is an option to study for a diploma or a degree in hotel management after completing class XII(any subject stream).The courses are conducted by several types of institutions –government /privately managed institutions, institutions operated by hotel chains, university affiliated colleges offering degree courses etc.

Selection to most of the courses is conducted through an entrance examination which includes a written test, interview, and group discussion. The written test is designed to measure general mental ability, analytical reasoning, numerical aptitude and English language ability.

ANS. National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology, Library Avenue, Pusa Complex, New Delhi110012(government run)and Indira Gandhi National Open University conducts the joint entrance test(JEE) for approximately 24 Hotel Management institutions for the 3 years bachelors of science programme in Hospitality and Hotel Administration.

Total number of seats available on all India basis is approximately 3100.

Eligibility Criteria:Students passing the 10+2 system or equivalent examination with 50% in any stream with English as one of the subjects are eligible to apply. Age limit is 22years.The month for applying is January.

The combined entrance examination consist of anobjective type test coveringproblems, which are designed to test your reasoning ability and logical deduction, questions on hospitality industry, general awareness and proficiency in written and spoken English.
