Q1. Could you let me know about the different fields in fine arts, what they cover and its scope? Could you let me know about some of the institutes offering courses in this discipline?


ANS. Pursing fine arts is no longer a mere hobby, but can be a lucrative career option as well. Fine arts include paint­ing, sculpture and applied / commercial arts. Each field is extensive and requires hard work and perseverance to succeed. Skills required are creativity, imagination as well patience.


Painting

Painting involves design ing portraits, murals, sceneries, still life, abstracts painting and print making, using vari­ous types of medium and on different surfaces. With mushrooming of art galleries and commercialization of paintings, the field has become lucrative. Today, an established artist can sell his work of art for lakhs. Other career options available for artists are teaching, freelancing, designing and working as an art consultant.


Sculpture

Sculpting is crafting stat ues, figures and monu ments by either chiseling stone, carving wood or modeling clay. Modern sculptors use materials like cement, concrete, pla ster of Paris or white bronze. Sculpture provides a common denominator for many related disciplines such as architecture, design and imagery.


Applied art / commercial art

Commercial art implies application of various mediums of art for busi ness purposes such as advertisement, graphic designing, and designing book jackets and so on. An applied art is an extension of art in industrial field, for exhi bitions and window dis plays, hoarding tech niques, catalogues, cine ma slides and illustrator.


Some of the avenues are:

Graphic designing, which includes designing brochures, posters, ban ners in exhibitions, designing pages for news papers, promotional dis plays, company's logo, web pages, brand station ary and so on; animation; interior decoration; fash ion designing; automobile designing, event management and so on. Today students with knowledge of both animation and web design ing have a great future as companies nowadays, prefer multi-skilled professionals.
