QS. I am studying in class XII. What is the best time to apply for TOEFL and SAT? Should I apply after my 10+2 or after my graduation? I am very confused.

ANS.TOEFL is a basic requirement for assessing proficiency in the English language (as is spoken in North America) of all those who wish to ap ply for higher studies in the US and whose na tive language is not English.

You would need the TOEFL scores while applying for undergraduate and postgraduate studies. However, SAT scores are meant to assess a student's preparedness for pursuing undergraduate study in US colleges, so schedule SAT if you are interested in applying to US colleges for your undergraduate education (leading to a Bachelor's degree).

If you are planning to apply for admission to US colleges in the 2007-2008 sessions, you should be scheduling TOEFL and SAT now.

If you want to pursue your Master's degree in the US, you should be applying for TOEFL and GRE (for all graduate courses) in the final stages of your Bachelor's degree or after. For admission to professional courses like MBA, medicine, law, pharmacy, etc you would have to appear for GMAT, MCAT, LSAT, PCAT, etc respectively. For up-to- date information you can visit the TOEFL website:www.ets.org/toefl. and the SAT website:www.collegeboard.com.

QS.I have taken up Arts in class XII CBSC boards and interested in pursuing an undergraduate course in The United States. Could you give me information about the TOEFL - iBT Internet Based Testing?

ANS: The TOEFL – iBT [Test of English as a Foreign Language - Internet Based Test] has been introduced in some locations within India starting April 2006.

The new TOEFL – iBT is a linear and computer adaptive test. This means that all candidates answer questions from the same range of difficulty, rather than receiving only questions at the ability level.

The new TOEFL iBT tests all four language skills that are important for effective communication; speaking, listening, reading and writing. There is no longer a struc ture section. Grammar is tested on questions and tasks in each section.

The test has a new speak ing section, which includes independent and integrated tasks. Test takers will need to speak into a microphone when they respond. The re sponses are digitally record ed and transmitted to ETS's Online Scoring Network, where they are evaluated. In the writing section, you must write a response to questions, (materials) they have heard and read, and to compose an essay in sup port of an opinion.

It also now requires typ ing. There is an integrated task in addition to the cur rent independent task, and the scoring guides (rubrics) used for rating are different from the current test. Also, test takers can now take notes on any section of the test and can use the notes when giving answers. The Test fee for TOEFL iBT is 140$.

Sample practice test and other resources are available on:www.ets.org/toeflpractice.

For up-to -date information you can visit TOEFL website:www.ets.org/toefl.

QS. Could you apprise me about the newly launched three year degree programme for commerce students with a specialisation in banking and insurance launched by Mumbai University? I would like to know the details of the course content?

QS. I am studying in FYB.COM (Banking and Insurance). What further studies can I pursue to enter the banking sector? I joined this course as it would help me for the Probationary Officers (PO) exam to become a manag er in a bank. After doing M.Com, can i achieve a higher rank in a bank? From where can I get study material for Bank PO Exam?

ANS. This course is not necessary for taking the bankPO exam. But rather than any other graduation programme, this would be more relevant for someone who wants to understand the working of the industry.

The bank PO exam is conducted by nation alised banks to recruit graduates (securing at least 60 per cent, in most cases, but could be 65 per cent and above too) for recruitment into the jun ior management cadre.

After training on-the job through the two year probation period, and some years of work expe rience, one may become a manager of such a bank.

In the private sector banks, first class graduates are recruited as Officer Trainee through a selection process similar to the PO selec tion procedure. However, management cadre entry in the private and foreign banks is mainly through campus recruit ment of MBAs from B-schools.

Officers in commercial banks can get lateral entry into private and foreign banks if they have experience relevant to the vacancies. The bank POexam consists of a written exam which has an objective test and a descriptive test (merely qualify ing in nature). The objective test has sec tions on quantitative aptitude (usually arithmetic of secondary school level); reasoning (analytical and logical, verbal and non-verbal); general awareness (main ly current affairs and with emphasis on banking, economy, and related matters); and English language (merely qualifying with questions on English language usage and com prehension).

There are bank PO study guides by reputed publishing houses. Those who clear the written test are called for interview. M.Com would not automatically give you a higher rank in a bank. In the field of insurance, consider courses by the Insurance Institute of India(www.insuranceinstituteofindia.com).

MBA after B.Com (banking and insur ance) can lead to entry as management trainee in the private sector and foreign banks as also private insurance companies.
